Colorado State men’s basketball falls to San Diego State late Wednesday night

Colorado State men’s basketball shot a season-low 33.3% from the field and turned the ball over 17 times in a 73-50 loss to San Diego State late Wednesday night at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

The loss was the fourth in the past five games for the Rams and the seventh in their past 10. CSU fell to 12-9 overall and 3-7 in the Mountain West Conference.

CSU played even with the Aztecs for much of the first half until San Diego State used an 8-0 run to take an 11-point lead with about 1 1/2 minutes left before halftime. The Rams were able to cut the Aztecs’ advantage to six at the break, 33-27, after a layup by Josh Pascarelli and a 3-pointer by Jevin Muniz.

San Diego State opened the second half with a 9-0 run to go ahead 42-27, but the Rams cut their deficit back to eight at 42-33 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Brandon Rechsteiner and Pascarelli. The Aztecs answered with an 8-0 run to go ahead 50-33, and CSU never got within single digits again.

Muniz led the Rams with nine points. It was the first game since Dec. 19, 2020, that CSU did not have a player score in double-figures.

CSU’s 17 turnovers led to 16 points for the Aztecs. San Diego State outrebounded the Rams 32-24.

The Rams will be back in action Saturday at Wyoming. Tipoff at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
