Armed man shot, wounded by Fremont County deputy

An armed man was shot and wounded by Fremont County sheriff’s deputy in Cañon City on Friday night, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

A deputy initially responded to a welfare check in the 1400 block of Chestnut Street about 6 p.m. and found a 27-year-old man barricaded inside the home.

The man was armed and pointed his gun at the deputy before the deputy shot him, CBI spokesperson Rob Low said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

The deputy was not shot but later had a medical incident related to the shooting, Low said. The deputy was taken to a hospital and has been released.

CBI agents found devices that appeared to be bombs inside the home, but the Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad determined they were inert, according to the agency.

The suspect is expected to be arrested on suspicion of assault, menacing and prohibited use of a weapon after he’s released from the hospital, CBI officials said.

The deputy was wearing a camera during the confrontation, and video will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
