CU Buffs coach Deion Sanders on sign-stealing in college football: “Everyone’s trying to get an edge”
BOULDER — Deion Sanders had two words for those coaches and fans wringing their hands about alleged sign-stealing in college football:
“Stop it,” the first-year CU Buffs coach and former NFL and MLB star said at his weekly news conference late Tuesday morning at CU’s Champions Center.
And by “stop it,” Coach Prime referred to stopping a play that you already know is coming. In fact, Sanders seemed non-plussed about the allegations of sign theft levied against coach Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football program
“I don’t know how accurate that stuff is,” Sanders said. “I mean, everybody’s trying to get an edge. Everyone’s trying to get an edge wherever they can.
“You can have someone’s whole gameplan. They could mail it to you. You’ve still got to stop it.”
Michigan is under NCAA investigation for an alleged off-campus sign-stealing operation. Wolverines analyst Connor Stalions bought tickets to more than 30 Big Ten games over recent seasons, according to an ESPN report, and the university announced it has suspended Stalions with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
Sanders was asked Tuesday to compare sign-stealing in Major League Baseball, where he played for roughly a decade, to what the Wolverines have been accused of.
“In baseball, if I know a curveball is coming, I got you,” Sanders said. “In football, if you know a sweep is coming, (you) still gotta stop it. It’s still a physical game, you’ve still gotta stop it. I don’t buy into a lot of that stuff. You’ve still gotta play the game.”
